NRAM – Week 3 – Radon Mitigation System

January is National Radon Action Month and we will be posting a featured project every Monday.

We are excited and motivated by all the people that are taking action to reduce their risk of radon induced lung cancer.  This house that we worked on, had some unique challenges.  Even though the house had drain tile the size of the cracks in the floor were allowing too much air into the radon mitigation system.

For maximum airflow we installed the radon vent pipe directly into the sump basket.  We fully sealed the sump basket, installed a view port and added a quick de-coupler to the radon vent.  Since there were very large cracks in the basement floor we needed to seal those, so that the radon mitigation system worked efficiently and effectively.

In the garage we installed fire collars on the vent pipe.  We selected the radon vent pipe to be the same color as the other vents already on the roof.

The u-tube is one of the most important parts of the radon mitigation system.  The u-tube is an indication of the radon fan still working.  If the u-tube goes too high or too low, its an indication that the system is no longer reducing radon in your home.
